Maoz Tzur: The deep origins and surprising meaning of this wonderful sing-a-long poem with Rabbi Rafi Zarum

The poetic form of the Chanukah song Maoz Tzur reveals a particular attitude to Jewish survival, especially with regards to assimilation and the challenge of balancing Judaism with daily life. Using Talmud and Midrash, the enigmatic ‘seven shepherds’ of the final sixth verse will also be explained. They reveal a new understanding of the two ‘sides’ of the Chanukiah and a confident vision of the modern State of Israel. And so, Maoz Tzur gives us a special boost, something we can all do with right now.
