Berlin during the Weimar Republic was Germany’s answer to the Roaring Twenties, a city bursting with creativity, experimentation, and contradiction in the aftermath of military defeat, revolution, hyperinflation, and social upheaval. Immortalized the film Cabaret and the TV series Babylon Berlin, Weimar Berlin became a laboratory for modern life, where jazz clubs and cabarets flourished, sexual and gender norms were challenged, avant garde art and theater exploded, and writers, filmmakers, musicians, intellectuals, and political radicals competed to redefine German culture. Jewish artists, thinkers, performers, publishers, and entrepreneurs were deeply woven into this extraordinary cultural moment, even as antisemitism and political extremism gathered strength around them. In this session, we will enter the nightclubs, theaters, cafés, cinemas, and streets of 1920s Berlin to explore a society dancing between liberation and instability, dazzling creativity and impending catastrophe, and ask why this brief, intoxicating experiment in modernity continues to fascinate us a century later.
