World Refugee Day is celebrated every year in June, designated by the United Nations to commemorate the strength, courage and perseverance of millions of refugees. In a time when the number of displaced persons is the highest ever recorded at 65 million worldwide, it is even more important that we pay attention. World Refugee Day is identified as a "key moment for the public to show support for families forced to flee."
The Orange County Jewish Coalition for Refugees is sponsoring this event which will include speakers, both refugees and experts addressing the current crisis. Representatives of national and local organizations will be present to talk about the programs and services they offer to assist with the crisis. In addition, there will also be music performed by local refugees, a craft exhibit of local Afghan and Tibetan artisans, and food catered by a local refugee catering group.
