8:15 PM Speaker: Dr. Mel Scult will speak about his new book “The Radical Judaism of Mordecai Kaplan”
Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, the founder of Reconstructionism, was one of the most provocative and original thinkers on the Jewish scene. For the first time, in Professor Scult’s new book, Kaplan’s thought is presented in its entirety and goes far beyond the concept of “Judaism As A Civilization.” Kaplan, the prophet of Jewish peoplehood, was also the prophet of Jewish personhood. He sought to democratize, Americanize and individualize Jewish tradition and, through these efforts, to strengthen the Jewish people. Dr. Scult studied philosophy at NYU and Harvard and Jewish Studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary. He has a Ph.D. from Brandeis University and has spent his life teaching Judaic Studies at Vassar, Brooklyn College and the Jewish Theological Seminary. Professor Scult has published numerous volumes, including a biography of Mordecai Kaplan, and an analysis of Kaplan’s thought, which is his most recent work.
