The Universal Cry of the Shofar: General Sisera, Roald Dahl and the Nature of Evil in Rafi Zarum
The origins of the sounding of the Shofar are complex and multiple, but in essence it is the primal scream of emotion that is common to all humanity. In this class we will look at some of the biblical and talmudic origins of the Shofar’s various sounds – the tekiah, the shevarim, and the teruah – in order to understand its raw power and effect. A surprising short story by Roald Dahl will help us see the universal nature of the vibrations that emanate from this hollowed-out ram’s horn.
