We will turn a “midrashic eye” on the Getty and its exhibitions, examining works of art under the premise that they can speak to us like texts, and trying to understand not merely their subjects or style, but the ideas behind them, and the ways in which they may be used as windows into the minds, hearts, and souls of those who commissioned and created them. We will be applying the fascinating and often quirky and surprising approaches to interpreting works of art that Professor Epstein has utilized in his many books and articles, including the recent Skies of Parchment, Seas of Ink, Jewish Manuscript Illumination, a winner of the National Jewish Book Award.
