Love and Loss in an Israeli Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Community: Freudian Readings of the Hit Israeli Show Shtisel
Featuring Dr. Julia Wagner, live from England
Join us as we explore the first two seasons of the hit Israeli show Shtisel in light of Freud’s writings about themes of mourning, attachment, death, drives and libido. We will delve into the father-son (Shulem-Akiva) and mother-daughter (Giti-Ruchama) plotlines and character developments, as well as representations of dreams, memories and desires, enriching our understanding of the emotional drama and its phenomenal audience appeal. No prior reading is necessary, but familiarity with Shtisel is recommended. Season 3 of Shtisel, starring Michael Aloni (Akiva), Doval’e Glickman (Shulem), Neta Riskin (Giti) and Shira Haas (Ruchami), is coming to Netflix in Spring 2021.
