A Tale of Three Jewish Cities
A panoramic view of three Jewish communities connected to each other in early modern Europe and the remarkable vitality and significance of the cultures they shaped. The enduring symbol of Prague’s Jewish culture was its great rabbi and his alleged creation of the golem, an artificial man. Venice celebrates this year the five hundredth anniversary of the first ghetto in Europe, an imposed separation and isolation from the Christian majority whose legacy Jews grappled with for centuries. Amsterdam, the city of Rembrandt and Spinoza, became a haven from persecution for conversos/marranos escaping persecution and a harbinger of new challenges to Jewish identity.
